WELCOME TO EVERYDAY HAND LETTERING!

If you’re here, it’s likely that one (or many!) of these statements resonates with you:

  • You've always wanted to learn to letter!
  • You’ve dabbled a bit in hand lettering, but it’s time for some guided instruction.
  • You have tried your hand at a few lettering workbooks, but you need someone to demonstrate.
  • You know the resources are out there, but you’re too busy to figure out how to put everything together.
  • You’ve always wanted to have pretty handwriting, but you claim you write “like a kindergartner.” ;)
  • You’ve tried to teach yourself lettering, but it’s harder than it looks.
  • You know the basics of lettering, but you need help figuring out how and what to practice.

By the end of this class, you will:

  • learn about the essential supplies for hand lettering
  • learn how to practice the basic strokes that make up the letters of the alphabet
  • learn how to form each letter of the alphabet
  • learn how to connect letters to form words
  • learn how to practice on an ongoing basis

I can't wait to see you inside!

Alex Bray

Alex Bray has been a full-time hand letterer for over 5 years, specializing in calligraphy and lettering education. Her most important roles are wife and mom, and she loves that her work allows her to do what she loves with babies underfoot!

Prior to her time in the creative industry, she was a teacher for 4 years and a coach and curriculum designer for 2, so she loves that this course has allowed to her to put her adult education skills to use!

Most days, you'll find her at playdates, at the library with her daughter, sipping one cherished cup of coffee--and of course, lettering for fun.

Course Curriculum

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the course start and finish?
The course starts now and never ends! It is a completely self-paced online course - you decide when you start and when you finish.
How long do I have access to the course?
How does lifetime access sound? After enrolling, you have unlimited access to this course for as long as you like - across any and all devices you own.
What is the time commitment?
The time commitment is whatever you want it to be! The course was made specifically for busy people and was designed to be consumed in sections. I suggest watching a section’s video(s) and completing that section’s handouts while the instruction is fresh in your mind, though many of our testers said they felt comfortable bouncing from section to section given their own practice needs. You can pause and re-watch videos to your heart’s content, so you get to decide how long your practice sessions last, and how often they occur. I also have an entire section devoted to developing a practice habit; my goal is that the materials equip you with the resources to develop an ongoing habit of practice.
Can I buy the course and share my login/worksheets with a friend?
Each person who takes the course is required to register independently. If you want to gather a group to do the course together in a party-style, please email me at prairielettershop@gmail.com so I can set you up with a material/supply bundle at a discounted rate for a group of 6 or more.
What supplies do I need?
Once you’re inside the course, you’ll have access to a TON of information regarding supplies and where to get them. I have also prepared a limited number of supply kits (over 90% of poll respondents wanted this option!). Visit the course tab of my website to order one. This is a course designed with busy, no-fuss people in mind. With that said, my aim is to suggest as many easy-to-find, affordable supplies as possible so that you don’t have to break the bank to get started—and you may even find the bulk of what you need around the house or one quick trip to your nearest retailer.
Is this course appropriate for kids?
I have had in-person workshop guests as young as 8, and my general rule is that a motivated, interested young learner with great motor skills and a general command on handwriting/cursive will do well with this course. Some of the text-based printed materials may be too lengthy or detailed for an elementary school student, but you can certainly make modifications to make the course work for a young artist. This course would be perfect for an interested teen or preteen. If you have any questions about readiness, please email me at prairielettershop@gmail.com.
I have taken your in-person workshop/another lettering course before. Is this course going to be right for me?
This course is designed to cover the basics of hand-lettering, so if you have previous experience, there may be some parts of the course that refresh skills you’ve once learned. This is not an advanced course of study, and though there is a simple brush lettering bonus, the bulk of the class focuses on hand-lettering with markers and pens—not lettering done with a brush/nib and ink. This course is definitely for you if you have a handle on the basics of lettering and want resources and/or a structure for ongoing practice. I can see many of my own workshop students benefiting from this aspect of the course’s design. If you have questions about your unique situation, please email me at prairielettershop@gmail.com and I’d be glad to help! ( As a rookie letterer, I took classes from at least four different teachers and am a major proponent of learning from a variety of sources.)
I’m extremely structured. OR I’m an extreme free spirit. Is there a place in this course for me?
As a former teacher educator, I love appealing to unique learning styles. About 75% of my in-person workshop students are structured, and about 25% of my students are completely free-flowing. For that reason, I took careful measures to provide differentiated resources and practice options based on the spectrum of loose to structured. You will find so many different ways to practice in this course, so YES, there is a place for you.
I write like a kindergartener. Are you sure I can do this?
I’m always surprised by how many people write themselves off before they even get started, and this is a question I get all the time in my in-person workshops. We’re always our own worst critics. Because of my teaching background, I focus on the very most important skills to get started, and quickly build from there. I say that I am obsessed with practice because it’s literally the ONLY thing that makes a significant difference in anyone’s lettering—so there’s always a place for anyone in this course, no matter how messy or illegible they perceive their writing to be. The stated outcome of the class is to help inspire & equip people to build a habit of practice—not to reach a certain bar or achievement level—but to RELAX, try something new, and tap into creativity. That said, JOIN US! You’ll be amazed at what you can do!
